Tips for Parents!

Tips for Listening to Your Child Read

 Listen. Do not immediately correct your child’s mistakes when reading.

 Don’t put pressure on your child, remember—you want to promote a positive attitude towards reading.

 Do not go back through the book quizzing your child on letters or the words that were in the story.

 Help at the time, if needed. If your child tried to read the word, then praise them for their effort, give some other clues to figure out the word. Ask your child again to read the word. If they still don’t know the word, then tell them what the word is.

 Don’t be upset if your child can’t remember the word the next day. Give the clues again.

 Believe that your child will learn to read!

 Encourage and help your child to practice (don’t forget that reading aloud to your child is practice as well). Let them reread easy and familiar books many times.

 Remember that children learn to read at different rates, there are many things for your child to learn when they are learning to read. Most importantly, you must support and praise what your child is doing or trying to do.

Everyone is A Storyteller!

In your child's bookfolder you will find information on our new unit entitled, Everyone is A Storyteller. We will explore how we can express and communicate ideas and experiences through stories.

Sharing Schedule
For this unit please have your child bring in their favourite book, story, poem, picture, painting or photo as we explore different ways to tell a story.

I am looking for parents who might be willing to help out in our classroom during this unit to:
share their favourite story
share an art lesson
help to make puppet theatres or puppets

Dolch Word List

I am sending home a word list for your child. These are words that we will focus on this year.

The words I am focusing on this week (January 17th) are:

Thursday

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

To help at home you can have your child write the words on a piece of paper and then cut them up and ask your child to put them back together again in the correct order.

Please have your child practice days of the week by telling you what today is, what tomorrow will be and what yesterday was - this will reinforce this skill for them - thank you!

The children have been introduced to card writing and letter writing. A fun activity might be to have your child make a card for their friend, relative or you!
